SoulGrief are an extreme metal band hailing from Halifax, West Yorkshire. The aptly named three-piece released their EP ‘Hope Dies’ in December 2025, featuring four mystifyingly dark tracks which explore themes of torment, despair, and chaos. Evoking a cold, raw, melancholy atmosphere, ‘Hope Dies’ distinctly combines intense lyricism with harsh vocals, fast tempos, and eerie instrumentation.
The EP commences with ‘Noise Bathing Through the Apocalypse’, a haunting track characterized by its harsh vocals and energetic guitars, bringing forth a sense of desperation and dread. The track instantly indulges listeners with its captivating intro, evoking a profound, gloomy, brooding atmosphere. Contrasting high pitched shrieks with lower sounding guttural vocals, ‘Noise Bathing Through the Apocalypse’ creates a potent sense of chaos fuelled by raw emotional intensity.
Continuing the melancholic, unearthly ambience of ‘Hope Dies’, the EP’s second track ‘Mercitronic Salvation Algorithm’ is a tantalizingly dark, immersive experience. Delivered through screeching, howling vocals and featuring an aggressively gritty riff, the song’s melodic sound and emotionally charged lyrics are a feast for the senses. The track’s doom-like pace enhances vocal brutality, nurturing a pessimistic atmosphere and creating a thick, abrasive sound that smothers the listener.
‘The Pale Wanderer’, appearing third on the EP, encompasses a tumultuous state of consciousness. The track’s fast tempo compliments its shrieking vocals, generating a frenzied, chaotic atmosphere characterised by wicked force. In addition to this, the trance-like, hypnotic sounding drums create a relentless wall of sound intensity, inflicting listeners with a powerful wave of emotion. Standing out due to its immense speed and maniacal, thumping percussiveness, ‘The Pale Wanderer’ arouses listeners with its callously murky charm.
The EPs final track ‘Shattered Reflections From the Mist of the Last Contagion’ immediately draws listeners in with its ethereal, droning ambience. Established by its macabre, haunting melody, this track emphasises feelings of despair and introspection, evoking a poignant sense of longing. Transitioning pace throughout its duration, ‘Shattered reflections From the Mist of the Last Contagion’ stimulates chaos and enhances drama. This engaging contrast allows for a heavy release, enabling the listener to fully absorb the emotional weight of the music.
‘Hope Dies’ compellingly amalgamates all the greatest components of extreme metal. Incorporating exceptional vocal range, haunting instrumentation, dark ambience, and majestic doom influences, ‘Hope Dies’ conjures up a cataclysmically melancholic atmosphere that promotes mighty feelings of catharsis. Highlighted by its raw emotional intensity, ‘Hope Dies’ connects with listeners on an esoteric level, exploring themes of chaos and despair through means of artistic complexity; extreme metal fans can eagerly anticipate Soulgrief’s next chapter.
