Interview With Country Singer Joe Buchanan
18 November 2025 | Written by Antonia Vlad
Texas-born and raised country singer Joe Buchanan has released his highly anticipated third studio album, Heaven and Earth on 30th September.
The 15-track album is a diverse blend of the heart of Texan-style soul, intertwined with Jewish traditions and personal storytelling - a project that opens doors across cultures. Joe described this album as a classic country love song, reflecting on “capturing the enduring love, partnership, and joy of finding your perfect dance partner.”
‘My Beloved’ is a ballad on this album that Joe dedicated to his wife, April, in celebration of their 26th year of marriage. As an independent musician, Joe expressed that producing music is expensive and that every day is a school day in the ever-changing music industry.
In our interview, I asked Joe to reflect on the influences that birthed Heaven and Earth - a creative mission that took him two years to complete. Growing up, Joe recalled struggling with his religious identity, not quite knowing where his place in the world was. The ongoing struggle took a drastic and unexpected turn when he met his wife, April.
Thirteen years into his marriage, Joe discovered that April is Jewish. This surprise was brought up during a visit to the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. when April said, “I want to get in touch with my people’s faith.” Joe mentioned that this was a pivotal moment for them, as April had never mentioned anything about her religious heritage.
Joe was very touched by this event and converted to Judaism in his mid-30s, igniting an adventure into faith and country music inspired by the Torah.
Not long after his conversion, Joe was invited by a rabbi to lead services with him. Since then, he’s toured the US, leading Shabbat services, concerts, and workshops. He has also initiated weddings in the Jewish community.
Joe is a strong believer in the importance of country music’s legacy. He considers that at its core, country music is “beer and trucks at its worst and best.” Traces of vintage Americana, as well as the small-town life mood, merge with twangy, upbeat guitar riffs are present in tracks across the Heaven and Earth album - in songs such as ‘Texas’ and ‘Good Times.’
Joe credited Alan Jackson and George Strait as the founders of shaping his musical direction. We also bonded over our admiration for country icon Dolly Parton.
In another impressive quest, Joe is collaborating with fellow artists to advocate for the first Jewish music category at the Grammy Awards. The idea is still a work in progress; however, the academy is taking this into consideration.
He’s also creating EPs of songs that didn’t make it onto Heaven and Earth. As part of Joe’s fall 2025 tour, he and his band will be making their final stop in Birmingham on the 26th-30th of December - the first time he’ll perform in the UK. Outside of Joe’s busy music-making career, he nurtures a thriving online community called Small Town Tribute - which focuses on connecting fans through the power of music.
