Thundermoon - ‘Wild’ | Single Review
August 18 | Written By Becca Stokes
Edinburgh-based band Thundermoon are living up to to their enchanting band name in their debut single ‘Wild’. It’s a track that takes you gently by the hand and leads you away from the everyday noise, towards a more earthy and idyllic place. The queer trio, made up of friends Shaz Jamieson, Lorna Kelly and Kat Messer, has flourished in the local music scene, having already progressed from their first gig at a friend’s house to appearances at events such as the Meadow’s festival and the upcoming Edinburgh Fringe festival. They’re definitely a band worth watching out for.
The three Scots endearingly define their music as, ‘songs to drown out capitalism and dance in the forest with your pals to’, and they are absolutely right. Better still, if heading into nature to frolick with your friends is something you dont have the opportunity to do right now, the rich imagery within the lyrics of this song will take the listener to that sun-soaked forest haven- even if real life looks a bit dull.
In the opening of the song, Thundermoon invite the listener to join them on a trip to the wild; a place where we can, ‘take our first breath that we’ve had in a while’. The lyrics of this track pay homage to a feeling that is familiar to many: the wistful longing to escape city life, and all of the struggles that come with it. The wording is intimate and playful, as though Thundermoon are welcoming the listener into their own secret world where, for a duration of almost five minutes, this escape is granted.
While the well-crafted layers of synths in ‘Wild’ are reminiscent of an upbeat 80’s classic, the electronic drum beat holds a closer resemblance to the genre of bedroom pop. The result is a retro sound with a subtle modern twist. It’s a balance that works. Accompanying the instrumental is an ethereal harmony of vocals that perfectly reflect the themes that Thundermoon explore, particularly in the second half of the track, in which the most poignant lyric: ‘If you're staying up a while/ I'll meet you in the wild at the end of the world’, is repeated, as the cacophony of synths fade beautifully to a finish.
Released on the 28th of July, this is the first track from Thundermoon’s EP, set for launch at Leith Depot on the 22nd of September. It’s an event deserving of anticipation, and will hopefully offer a deeper dive into the songwriting ability that takes listeners on such an immersive journey in ‘Wild’. Get ready to go outside.
