Sophia Kennedy - ‘Imaginary Friend’ | Single Review

June 26 2025 | Written By Lauren Ketterl

Baltimore based and German born artist Sophia Kennedy released her newest single ‘Imaginary Friend’ on May 7th leading up to the release of her new album “Squeeze Me”, set to release on May 23rd and if the album is anything like the song, it is certain to be your new favorite hit.

“Squeeze Me” is Kennedy’s third album since she started releasing music in 2017. She released the single ‘Rodeo’ in late January, marking the start of the album. Since then, Kennedy has released two more songs, ‘Hot Match’ and ‘Imaginary Friend,’ which match the album's pop/psychedelic tones.

The song ‘Imaginary Friend’ discusses managing grief and letting go of the idea of a person that you’ve imagined. We all have a tendency to romanticize the idea of a person or situation, even though, in most cases, they don’t end up unfolding the way we planned. This song does a great job of putting those feelings into words. The lyrics “I know I’m stuck here with the version of you that’s no longer real” put those feelings into words. Sometimes you can be your own worst enemy, especially when it comes to overthinking, and this song explains why we need to let go for our own sake.

The rest of the album can be heard on May 23rd, and if Sophia Kennedy couldn’t be doing more, she is set to headline a London show at Shacklewell Arms on November 19th.
