Mayce - ‘The Man That I Met’ | Single Review

January 4 | Written By Becca Stokes

Mayce tells the story of losing sight of a lover-turned-stranger and all of the feelings that come with it in her all-too-relatable debut track, ‘The Man That I Met’. The song is an electric comeback for the artist formerly known as Macy Kate, whose recent rebranding hiatus has allowed her to refine her sound and return to the music industry ready to make an impact.

‘I’ve never been more proud to release a song’, tells Mayce, whose already notable career has built up to her most important release so far. The success of her preceding music has seen her amass a large social media following and her incredible vocal talent means that her live performances are widely coveted. This girl is no stranger to show-biz.

‘The Man That I Met’ fondly recounts time spent with a romantic partner- not bitter that it ended, but sentimental about the memories made during the relationship’s lifespan. ‘And part of me misses/ All those kisses/ Small town bars/ Billy Joel nights’. It is a tale of personal growth and looking back on something that ended painfully from a new, mature perspective- acknowledging the good that came from an experience, and never failing to appreciate the value of memories. This maturity is reflected not only in Mayce’s outlook on life, but also in the development of her musical sound.

Mayce The Man That I Met

Mayce's sound stems largely from alternative and Western influences while sustaining her pop roots, making for a dance-able track for those looking to romanticize reminiscing the past. The dreamy soundscape contributes to creating an intimate insight into a personal time of Mayce’s life; exploring cities and enjoying her youth, ‘dizzy’ in love. The track boasts the essence of a

piano power ballad with a Western twang that the audience will welcome with open arms upon hearing what a perfect combination this makes for.

While the lyrics encapsulate Mayce’s feelings surrounding love and the loss of love, the song itself is a reflection of much more than that; with the inspiration for this track being largely derived from a general sense of change in her life after leaving behind her roots in the chaotic city of Los Angeles and making a new home for herself in the more peaceful state of Utah.

Mayce is doubtlessly an artist with endless intriguing qualities and this really comes through in her music. For those who crave not only authenticity but a song with serious replay potential, ‘The Man That I Met’ is the track for you.
