Alex Kolo - ‘One of These Days’ | Single Review

Alex Kolo recently debuted her first single ‘One Of These Days’ which hit the streaming platform on the 12th of January this year. Launching the single just in January sets the whole mood for the rest of the year. Alex Kolo has a strong passion for music and travel. She has been studying abroad for some time, which is greatly reflected in her songwriting in the form of a rich blend of cultural diversities and experiences. Her debut track is an indie pop song with a gentle and melodic yet deep and heartfelt composition.
The opening starts with delicate and simple piano notes and the song builds up when Alex’s voice enters. The verse is slow and tempered with low voice tones which radiates both confidence and faith. The lyrics go ‘And I know that you’ve been hurt a time or two/If you try, I’m sure you find what’s right in front of you’. Those lines reflect unrequited love which is taken for granted. Alex reflects on it as a period of time that will pass. When moving to the chorus, high-pitched notes suddenly evoke bringing more feelings to the surface. ‘One of these days you finally gonna fall into the writing on the wall/One of these days you’ll wake up and you’ll see that it was always you and me/One of these days is all it’s gonna take/ So I’m saving my love for one of these days’.
The song is a melodic love ballad with a reflection on the difficulties and complexities of love. While seemingly straightforward, it radiates a sense of self-reflection and a journey of discovery for the artist. The song is not a dream pop like Lana Del Rey or Cigarettes After Sex, but it is rather closer to Halsey and Holly Humberstone. Personally, listening to the song I caught this edge in Alex's vocals, suggesting an earnest desire to express her deeper thoughts and emotions. I feel like we are to expect that Alex Kolo’s style will be sculpturing with the next songs to come.
If you want to explore some new hits this season, I would definitely recommend you listen to ‘One Of These Days’. The song is melodic and wholesome, and the lyrics are so catchy that I found myself mumbling the words only after listening to it just a couple of times. Just listen to my advice and let the rhythm do its part.
